Fans of local businesses, take note. This is one of the good ones. Today I bought one of their cherry coffee cakes for an office party. It was moist, dense and flavorful. I also bought some cute butterfly cookies because I couldn't resist. Those cookies were ok. I've had others from this bakery that were outstanding. Another fun option are the filled muffins and cupcakes. This bakery is a long-standing supporter of the MSU Museum Chocolate party and the first time I had the filled cupcakes was at that event. Heaven, absolute heaven!

My wife went in recently to speak with a cake decorator. As my wife was sitting down, the decorator showed up and just stood hovering over her. She was not pleasant at all and was in no way, shape, or form helpful. She was not interested in speaking to my wife. We may come here to buy standard cakes but will never have something custom made. The rest of the staff was very pleasant but how easy it is for one person to ruin your business.

My experience today makes me see why they have low ratings. I wish I had paid attention to this before ordering my daughter's birthday cake. They made a mistake on a frosting decoration--not a big deal, it happens. But instead of owning the mistake of making amends they insisted on charging me seven dollars for a director ration it would take no more than a minute to create. Disappointingly bad business.

Their gourmet cupcakes are wonderful but the staff has zero personality. They just want to ring up an order and that's it. I haven't been there in a year because their staff has no customer service training.

Horrible experience! Ordered a large birthday cake for an event last weekend 8/29- simple white cake, white frosting and a few roses. The decorations were nice, the frosting okay - the cake flavor was wrong on so so many levels- it was something akin to Red Velvet (we are only guessing). We were disappointed at the error in flavor - but served it anyway. Many of the guests just ate the frosting and left the cake on the plates and into the trash. The cake it was a bland, dry, with the texture of a 'cello sponge'. When contacted, there were no apologies and frankly what could they do? bake us another cake? No thank you! Never, never again.

The most bland dry cupcake ever. Totally dissatisfied. Also the monkey bread.....woof. Never going back.

Having a bridal shower, wanted to have something special versus a typical sheet cake from Sam's Club, so my mom suggested Bake N Cakes. We see their commercials all the times for great cakes and decorating, so were more than willing to drive to Lansing from Jackson (about half an hour) to get one of their cakes. To sum it up in a word DISAPPOINTED. After explaining a simple design on the phone to an associate who seemed just too bothered to even take my call or offer any assistance, we ended up with a cake that, who my friend put so eloquently, looked like "Are you kidding me? They charged you 70 dollars for something that I could have done with both hands tied behind my back and blindfolded?!?" She hit the nail on the head. It was PITIFUL. Crooked, uneven lettering, wrong color piping on the outsides, didn't follow simple instructions (this could have been the order takers' fault, though). When my mom picked up the cake, and asked to speak with the decorator, she was unwilling. (I would have been too, it was embarrassing.) Returning home with the cake and showing it to me, I had no choice but to laugh, because what am I going to do now, be mad? I'm sure not taking it back to the people who can't do it right the first time, So, I find a cake decorator here in town, and pay a premium. After spending 60 dollars to have a REAL decorator wipe the frosting from the cake and redo the entire thing, I now have a presentable cake. Advice? go to Sam's Club. Bake N Cakes, if you'd like to be a reputable business, feel free to contact me to rectify this.

Hugely disappointing on multiple visits. Their cakes and cupcakes are extremely dry, and that is the biggest complaint I have, especially since cakes are their namesake. They are very slow, although pleasant, behind the counter, and the atmosphere is pretty dreary. On one visit, we had a Swiss roll and my husband and I thought the creme was sour tasting. I've had much better boxed mixed cakes, and even better cakes from a grocery store, let alone all the other local bakery specialty stores who offer more variety and freshness than Bake N Cakes. It's strange to me how they've stayed in business.

We bought a couple day-old loaves of bread and a couple of fresh cinnamon buns. The bread was OK...dry...needed butter when consumed. The cinnamon buns were off-the-chain good...I mean run through a wall, silly-good. Staff was pleasant during our visit.

I live in California and my sister lives in North Carolina. We threw my mother a surprise 60th birthday party in Feb, and we needed a cake. As my sister and I were born and raised in the Lansing area, she recommended this bakery as she has ate their cakes before and they were very good. Well I called and made an order. I explained that it was a very special day as my mom's surprise 60th birthday. I am not the cake expert by any means, so when on the phone I was not 100% sure what I wanted. I went through with the lady on the phone what my mom's interests are as well as some of her favorite colors. I explained that I was not 100% sure what I wanted the cake to look like, but I did trust I was in good hands seems how they are a bakery. Well when my sister stopped to pick up the cake, the first problem was they could not find our cake. She called me frantically asking again who's name it was under. Finally they found our cake, but it wasn't in the computer system. The cake was a joke!!!! I would have not served it to a child. The decorations made the cake look like a child's cake. And to top it off, the colors were horrible together. There was huge RED writing saying Happy 60th Birthday, but it did not fit the cake at all. To top it all off they charged us over $50, for a cake that was worth $20!! I personally could have decorated the cake better than this place. Sadly enough we had to take the cake, as my mom's party was starting in just hours. If I owned a bakery, I would have never allowed a cake to walk out my doors looking so horrible!!!!! You should be ashamed you put your name on that cake!!!!!!

I really like cake, so when I won the gift card for Bake n Cakes I was pretty pumped. Bake n Cakes has all manner of confections including cookies, cupcakes, and brownies. I had already tried Bake n Cakes' cupcakes and judged them inferior to Sugar Shack, so I ordered two cakes for Valentines Day to try some of their other wares. They had a wide variety of cake and frosting flavors, which I enjoyed. I took the opportunity to order pineapple cake with pineapple frosting. Where else are you gonna get pineapple cake? The staff was friendly and efficient. When I went to pick up my cakes the store was very busy, but they seemed to get people in and out at a good pace. One of my two cakes had the wrong frosting, but the staff was cool about it and corrected the issue. The correction only took about ten minutes extra. Overall it was good cake and a good bakery.

Bought my wife's birthday cake here which was supposed to be a canoli frosted and filled cake. My wife and I took one bite an yaked. It hat a citrus hue to it and was not like the canoli I tasted in one before purchasing. Instead of giving me a refund they offered me a store credit. If I ate shit why would I want a credit for more shit? And...the day I picked up (I ordered three days ahead of time) they threw it together in 10 minutes. Seriously? Very bad business practice "ladies"

Customer service was very nice. The cakes are very moist but they are a little too sweets. Wish they didn't use so much sugar cream. Had the cake shot and I could only take one bite soooo sweet gave me a headache!!

When I travel, I love to review yelp and try different places to eat even if the reviews are bad or subpar. I decided to give this place a chance even though they had a couple of bad reviews and not a huge star rating. When I came into the bakery, the lady that was being helped had several requests of something she was ordering. I feel like the girl behind the counter was not interested in giving this lady good customer service. I am not saying it was bad, it just wasn't good. She had no idea what she could or could not do, and continually had to ask the manager. The lady that helped me was ok. I kind of felt rushed. I decided on on their signature Spartan football cookie, a red velvet cupcake, and two mini lemon cheesecakes. I bought the cupcake and cookie for my son and he hasn't tried them yet. So to be fair, I have no idea if they are good or bad. I did however eat one of the mini cheesecakes I bought. IT WAS FAB! The crust was wonderful, as was the filling. That alone makes it worth the trip!

I've ordered from Bake and Cakes a few times as well as stopped in for treats occassionally. Most recently I hosted a baby shower and I ordered a large cake and several dozen cookies. They had the order ready for me when I arrived, everything was made according to my requests. Their customer service is great. The guests at the shower could not stop raving about the quality of the cake and cookies. This is one local business that has my support.

F@ck this place. No seriously, they can go to hell. My fiancee and I drove all the way up from Chicago to do a "cake tasting" and to meet with a design person for our upcoming wedding. We arrived on time and they gave us four cakes to try(which we had to pay for btw). After figuring out which cake we liked best, we asked about pricing and if we could talk to their design person. It was at this point that we were informed by the rude staff that the cake person "is much to busy to meet with you today". WTF? Seriously, if you were to busy, why the hell did you schedule and appointment and why the hell did we drive all the way up to EL for this garbage? All in all, the cake is bland and the frosting is meh, the staff is rude both on the phone and in person. There are far better choices around that one could select for a wedding.

We bought delicious sounding and looking cupcakes today for our daughters birthday dessert. We purchased 6. The cake was so dry and the cake directly under the frosting was hard/stale. The red velvet cake had no flavor at all. No one finished their cupcake as they were too dry/stale tasting. We ended up throwing two of then away.
